hawaii part I
have you ever taken a really long flight with three kids {and my dad}? we hadn't, so we were super paranoid about making sure we had all the appropriate items required for entertaining these three kids and this happened to be jakes one and only job. anything to do with cords, charges, headphones and batteries, you can count me out. he takes it seriously too. to the point of driving me crazy. before we'd even made it to my parents house for the ride to the airport he'd switched out cayden and brooklyn's earphones {twice}. he had an entire baggy reserved for earphones to meet each persons preference for comfort. they both decided 10 minutes after leaving the driveway that they had not been given the most comfortable phones for their ears. omg. i thought "here we go" as he obliged their every whiny request {while driving. in the rain}. going on vacation makes me super irritable. isn't it supposed to have the opposite effect?
we made it to the airport, on time. early enough to sit around and see that actor from harry and the henderson's which is super cool, right? maybe not so much because he was totally alone and no one even acknowledged him. then cayden turned to me and said "look mom, there's a genie" so i was interested. turns out it was an indian man in head to toe bright orange with a nice sized turban on his head. jake told cayden not to ask him for any wishes.
on the plane we took a minute to shoot some "on the plane" photos. gavin started out like this at take off {which he thought was really cool} ...
and then when we landed. he was like this ...
i'm being a little sarcastic, maybe he slept for a minute but not a lot and spent a good amount of time right there on my dad's lap.
the flight to hawaii was great. enough big people to keep the little people entertained and we were so excited to be going somewhere, the time just flew by. hahahaha.
when we got to lihue we were tired. we had just lost four hours and it was already 8:30 at night in utah. bedtime for the kids but the sun was shining. cayden thought this was cool checking his watch for me every hour or so to guess what time it was in utah. but poor gavin was pooped. luckily he's the best baby in the world and never shouted a single protest.
by this time brooklyn as a little grouchy though. see that face? she'd just been in trouble for throwing a rock at a car.
my dad had to upgrade the rental car to a suburban. when he reserved the rental car he counted right when he decided how many seats we would need but he didn't count on the luggage. and there was a lot of luggage.
by the time we made it to the condo in princeville we were super tired. it was nearly 11:00 in utah and we still hadn't had dinner. there was no way we would make through a sit down dinner at a restaurant with all the kids {and my dad} so we headed to the grocery store for a few things. have you ever been grocery shopping with my dad? have you ever been grocery shopping with my dad, after a really long and tiresome day, with three kids, in an unfamiliar store with unfamiliar prices? it is fun.
so we were there and we were excited and truthfully, my dad was awesome the whole time. his patience was award worthy and he even watched elmo with gavin two or three times a day, every single day.
i won't bore you with every detail from every single day. i promise. it's just that the first day, the getting there, was a huge accomplishment for us. i was a nervous wreck to take all the kids and now that we're home, i swore to jake our next trip will definitely be without them {love you kids}.
needless to say all three of them crashed that night and as you might imagine, they were up bright and early at 4:30 the next morning! 4:30!! i was like, okay, for the next four hours no one can move or talk or jump or skip or yell gleefully. be boring, sedentary type children, please. but they didn't listen, we made it to 6:30 and then decided it would be okay to start the day. the first activity was take pictures of the sunrise from our balcony.

i actually took several pictures of myself over the course of the week and i'm not ashamed to show you how i look first thing in the morning because i was in hawaii and it didn't matter.
you can imagine our disappointment when it started pouring right after i shot these photos. we still got all gussied up in our beach attire and packed lunches for the day but the rain was relentless. the kids were stir crazy and i was getting nervous. what if it rained the entire trip and we were stuck in this condo with these kids {and my dad} for seven days?!
after only two hours of being cooped up jake decided he was getting wet in hawaii. i wasn't as enthusiastic but the kids were and that is really all that mattered.
later we drove around the island to check out a few beaches. it's beautiful there, naturally. we weren't able to swim in the ocean that day but luckily it was the only day that it really rained hard.
like i said, i have a lot of pictures so i'll post more later. i don't really plan on posting in any particular order but i do want to get as many photos posted as possible {in exception to those that may embarrass some people like the one i took of jake posing at sunrise. he swears he was just messing around. it's the cheesiest photo in the world and you would get a kick out of it ... seriously ... but i promised it wouldn't show up here. darn it}.
