cupid

were you filled with love yesterday? i know i was.

cayden told me last week that he learned about cupid in school.  he taught me all he knew which basically consisted of this baby that shoots people with an arrow and then he confidently assured me cupid would never be able to get him.

valentine's day  falls close to thanksgiving on my favorite holiday meter (yes, i have a meter). i don't really love it.  i'll give two reasons why this is.  first, in jr. high school people could buy roses from the cheerleaders to be delivered to their valentine during class.  the only time i ever got a rose was in the seventh grade and it happened to be from my brother in the ninth grade.  nice of him, yes, but still not quite what a scrawny brace-face seventh grader hopes for.  then i met jake in the eighth grade.  jake's not a romantic type. { i complaiend out loud about this once to a co-worker who happened to also be gay.  he told me to be very careful about what i wish for.  if your husband is buying you flowers from that cute boutique down the street and saying all the right things, you might have something else to worry about. i will never forget this!}.  in ninth grade, his mom cut the pocket off an old pair of his jeans and sewed for me a little heart shaped pouch that was filled with goodies.  it was cute but i knew he had no part in it.

the second reason is due to the fact that during highschool, i spent every valentine's day sitting in a large smelly arena watching boys in singlets wrestle each other.  considering jake was always a favored competitor, his focus was not on me.  most years, he would forget the holiday completely and after we graduated and were married, his brother was in highschool and so the tradition continued.   this weekend was no exception.  the state wrestling championships are available on demand, who knew? (jake).

as a little girl, i loved valentine's day.  my mom is always full of holiday spirit and she made sure we knew we were loved on this special day.  when i was young, we would doorbell ditch our valentines.  everytime i tell people this they think it's odd.  i've never met another person who dropped their valentine on the doorstep of the recepient and then rang the doorbell and bolted.  despite this, we still try to keep our little tradition alive.  the kids love to hear the doorbell on valentine's day, they know there will be a surprise.

our day of love was low key.  i bought heart shaped donuts the day before with the intention of keeping breakfast simple so i might be allowed to sleep in but my valentine had other plans that included harrassing me until i finally had to get out of bed.

we watched a terrible movie and then took the kids to the park after they doorbell ditched a plate of cookies to one of our valentine's.  we had dinner by candlelight which has become a fun tradition that the kids really look forward to.  during dinner brooklyn kept saying things like "this is such a delicious meal mom,"  "isn't this fun" and "what a nice dinner mom." she is truly a romantic.  (a little person turned the face plate sideways just because they knew it would bug me).

during the day i found sticky notes in random places from my valentine.  one happened to be on the back of my brush that he'd placed the night before without knowing i brush my hair before i get in bed. when he noticed the brush on the counter in the bathroom he got in bed and told me i ruined his surprise by finding his note early. i had no idea what he was talking about. i had brushed my hair in the dark.  it was a confusing twenty seconds and then it dawned on me what he was saying so the next morning i went straight to the brush but the note was gone.  later on he asked me if i'd seen any of his notes.  when i answered no, he said i must be out of my normal routine.  so i started looking.  i found one on the strawberries in the fridge.  on in my bra in the drawer and one somewhere else i will not divulge.  he's a goof but it was sweet.

anyway, it was a nice day.  i think the rest of the fam would agree (i hope so). i hope you had a nice day too.

I am loving the candle light dinner with the whole fam idea. Lovely. Your husband is so sweet to you, by-the-way. A bunch of us Mom's organized a progressive Valentines Party for our munchkins. At one house they played games, at another decorated sugar cookies. At our house they made homemade Valentine's Day cards. It was fun. Later on Matt and I went on a fabulous hike, then had a picnic in the freezing cold, then went out for Gelato. It was a total blast.

When I was a little girl, we too would doorbell ditch our valentines. I don't remember where we got the idea from, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't my mom. I remember the jean pocket gift. Jake was wanting to do something for you due to the wrestling every year thing. So, it really was a son thing coming to his mom for help. Therefore, it was his idea.
