90 years...
yesterday we celebrated grandma's 90th birthday. it was a lovely day and i hope she felt the same. brooklyn was born on grandma's real birthday, september 27th 2004. she knows this too and so the day was very confusing for her. she simply could not understand how it was not her birthday too and has asked me twice today already if it's her birthday yet. it's just not fair that great-grandma already had her party.
the party was put together from the combined efforts of my mom, diane, sarah and myself. i had the opportunity to put the beautiful photobook together for my grandma and i was pleased with the reaction it got and thank everyone for the many heartfelt "thank you's". i put many hours into this book, customized every page, every font, every color for a very large family all with the hopes that grandma would smile when she saw it for the first time. most everyone submitted a little note to grandma which her children all read to her last night after we gave her the book. mom insisited i sit next to grandma although i didn't want it to be a gift from me rather a gift from everyone but she wanted me to be there by her as she opened it. i've never seen my grandma shed a tear, not one time. she's warm and loving but not an over emotional woman. maybe that's what 90 years of life will do to you. when she saw the book, she shed a tear. i couldn't have been more pleased. after some time of everyone reading their love letters to her she said she felt like she was at her funeral but asked to keep "laying it on." she's witty as hell that 90 year old lady is. i love her so.
she was beautiful in her new skirt with her hair done lovely for the day. she sat patiently for a gazillion pictures. i'm sure it was difficult for her to hear everyone unless the conversation was right next to her but she seemed elated to just "be" there with her family. children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren came in from all over the country just to eat dinner with grandma.
for me, one of the memories that will stay with me forever is when we all let a balloon go with a message to grandma inside it. i looked at her as they floated into the sky and she was clapping her hands with a smile that reflected such youth.
happy birthday grandma!
