you, me and a tugboat

a couple of nights ago the husband took jon on a date and left me home with the kids (i know, rude, right?). i know it's hard to not feel bad for me but don't, it was my choice, nba games aren't really my thing even if the tickets were for center court, fourth row seats.

so it was just the kids and i. for some reason, c and b were delightful and quite. weird. they even successfully watched a movie together in my bedroom which never happens. this is a privilege that only one child is welcome to at a time because usually, they cannot handle being on such a big bed with all the fluff and softness that down provides. the temptation to jump and giggle and scream is just too strong so it's not often they make it through an entire movie without someone getting hurt or without leaving my room in a mess or without me warning them over and over to settle down until finally, someone has to lose the privilege.

but this night, they were feeling the calmness in the home, the same calmness i felt as i gave baby his bath. no tv, no music, no sound at all except for the dripping of the water and the "clanking" of the tug boat against the tub.

i watched him sit quietly and take everything in. the boat would clank and he would stop moving and then start rocking to try and make it happen again realizing he was causing the noise. it was so peaceful to just sit and watch him. one of those moments that makes you appreciate the opportunity to be a mom. to watch him try and grab the water where it meets the tub. exploring, experiencing, learning.

bathtime was longer than usual. normally we rush through it to get to the next child or or even for my own opportunity to cleanse but he splashed and played and enjoyed every minute of our quite time together looking to me for approval every time he would soak me with his splashes. i enjoyed every minute of it too even knowing i'd passed up some alone time with my hubby ...
